Toy Drive 1st Annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive was held on December 1st from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Those that brought a toy got a taco courtesy of NHHA! The Waterford had gift cards and gift bags for sale at the event. Thanks goes to all but especially Stephanie Eli.
We were able to drop off 100 toys at the drop box at the Thousand Oaks Library. Thanks to all! The early morning walkers helped by taking care of the tent. The Waterford stopped by with donations. We'll do this again next year.
Food Drive Members of KOTH were busy last Oct 13, 2007 for CLEAN UP DAY. In addition to trash pickup and work around the pool, they were collecting 145 lbs of food for the 1st Food Drive.
It was distributed by the Northern Hills Methodist Church to needy families on the northeast side of town.
The next food drive will be in May. Food Drives will occur twice each year along with the trash days.
NHHA Scholarships have been awarded for 2009
Five Graduating Seniors named “Northern Hills Homeowners Association Scholars”
It is always difficult to select the Northern Hills Homeowners Association applicants each year. We are pleased to announce that this year all five highly qualified seniors have been awarded a $l, 000 scholarship to the college of their choice. This group ties last year’s number of NHHA scholarships awarded. Capitol Cement, our “Partner in Education”, has pledged a second scholarship this year, and the NHHA has awarded two since 2006. An anonymous source pledged another $1,000 scholarship, which was gratefully appreciated, bringing a total of $17,000 in scholarships awarded to our neighborhood teens since 2005. This year’s scholars have really lived up to the high standards set by their predecessors.
Mr. Alex Clement Spalding is the recipient of a $l,000 Capitol Cement Scholarship. Alex is a graduate of James Madison High School and the son of Mr. & Mrs. Clem Spalding, Jr. Alex will be attending the University of Incarnate Word, where he will study Business/Communications. He was a member of “The Kids of the Hills” (KOTH), a Northern Hills volunteer youth service group, and a Life Scout. Alex was Captain of the Varsity Swim Team, and worked at the Northern Hills Swimming Pool for four summers (2006-09) where he served as a lifeguard, instructor, and volunteer coach. Alex belonged to the German Club and was a leader in the National Honor Society, and graduated with a 97.33 grade point average. His counselor described him as an excellent role model with “strength” and “integrity” in all his endeavors. A teacher stated that Alex went to China on a school sponsored program and made a very impressive representative of his school, city and country. We think he is also a great representative of Northern Hills as well. Good work, Alex!
Alex’s family is a member of the Northern Hills Homeowners Association.
Ms. Mariana Gonzalez is the recipient of a $1,000 Northern Hills Homeowners Association Scholarship. Marianna is a graduate of James Madison High School and the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Luis Carlos Gonzalez. Mariana is attending the University of Incarnate Word where she is studying Pre-med and Biology. She chose to complete her high school degree plan in three years so she could begin her courses at UIW. She received a Presidential Scholarship and was named to the Honor Roll all three years of high school. Mariana enjoys tennis and was a member of the Latin Club. A teacher stated that Mariana is a leader and positive influence in her Pre-AP Chemistry class and excels at critical thinking and problem-solving skills. She also works as a volunteer at an orchid greenhouse and enjoys working with pottery. Mariana is constantly challenging herself – it will be fun to watch this girl GO!
Mariana’s parents are also members of the Northern Hills Homeowners Association.
Mr. Joshua David Petry is the recipient of a $1,000 Northern Hills Homeowners Association Scholarship. Joshua is a graduate of James Madison High School and the son of Mr. & Mrs. David Petry. He will attend the University of Texas at Austin where he will study Architectural Engineering. Joshua has challenged himself with many Pre-
AP/AP classes and maintained a 99.99 cumulative grade average in a class of 661. He is in the top 4% of his senior class and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He has lettered in golf all four years and was team captain for the past two years; he was also named to the All-District Athletic Team. Josh was a member of “Mavs Make a Difference Club” and was the website director and fundraiser chairman for LAYA, Madison’s literary magazine. He gives his time volunteering for a variety of charity projects, achieved the honor of Eagle Scout, and was named to the National Honor Society for two years. A teacher writes that Joshua has spent much time in “Who’s Who Among High School Students”. Northern Hills is so proud of Joshua’s achievements.
Joshua’s family is also a member of the Northern Hills Homeowners Association.
Mr. Jason Michael Radl is the recipient of a $l,000 Northern Hills Homeowners Association Scholarship. Jack is a graduate of James Madison High School and the son of Mrs. Rose Radl. Jason will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio where he will study Biology. He has been a member of KOTH, our NHHA volunteer neighborhood youth service group “Kids of the Hills”, and participated in a pre-Freshman Engineering Program and Skills USA, and an alternate soloist in the Youth Symphony of San Antonio. Jason was a member of the Honors Band and has also studied the saxophone and keyboard. He has been involved in several sports including baseball and the Nadadores Swim Team at the Northern Hills Swimming Pool. He worked at The Waterford Retirement Center for Seniors on a regular basis while enrolled in several Pre-AP/AP classes. A teacher stated that Jason is entirely focused on his studies, conscientious, and self-disciplined. Sounds like we can expect great things from Jason!
Mr. Samuel E. Whisler is the recipient of a $1,000 Capitol Cement Scholarship. Sam is a graduate of James Madison High School and the son of Mr. & Mrs. Chris Whisler. Sam will be attending Rice University where he will study Engineering. He has excelled in many areas including academics, sports and music honors such as Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement, UIL Academic Team Coach and UIL Solo and Ensemble Music Awards. Sam was also a first class wrestler at Madison and posted a 4.0 grade point average while taking Pre-calculus Pre-AP, Calculus BC, Calculus AB, and scored a 5 on the College Boards Calculus AB exam and was an integral part of the UIL Mathematics Team. A teacher stated that Sam has the ability to master and “tame” a subject, that is accepted by most to be extremely difficult with an insight that often leads to an alternate solution with his gift of mathematics. A counselor described Samuel as a true ‘Renaissance Man’ with strong moral character and integrity at all times and a devotion to academic excellence. He is blessed with amazing talents and has devoted many hours in community service and was ranked #4 in his class of 681 students. What a guy!
Sam’s family are also members of the Northern Hills Homeowners Association.
Congratulations to all five of our scholarship recipients. We are so happy that Capitol Cement once again provided a second scholarship for our bright, energetic and talented young neighborhood students. They are always there for us, and I cannot thank Mr. Max Frailey enough for all of his support in so many activities that we sponsor here in Northern Hills. This included scholarships, National Night Out, Kids of the Hills, and our beautiful Northern Hills Swimming Pool, along with our Big Trash Cleanup Days twice a year. Please come to our next NHHA General Meeting on May 19, 2009, at 7.30 pm, for the presentation of this year’s exceptional scholars of Northern Hills.

Amazing fourth grader creates Mneumonic for our 11 planets
Maryn Smith, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Riverview Elementary School in Great Falls, Mont., knows that there are 11 planets in the solar system. In order of increasing distance from the sun, they are, of course, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Eris.
The trouble is, you and millions of Americans just like you don't know any of this.
You vaguely remember Venus because that's where ladies come from, and Mars because of the rock that looks like a face. And you've got no idea -- none, nada -- about Ceres and Eris, two of the solar system's dwarf planets, along with Pluto, which word conjures in your mind a picture of Mickey's dog.
So how to school you on space? This was Maryn's quest.
Inspired by a contest put on by the National Geographic Society, her class set about coming up with a mnemonic for the solar system's 11 planets. You know, like "Roy G. Biv" for the colors of the rainbow -- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet -- or, for the Great Lakes, "Homes" (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).
Maryn won the contest with her thoroughly excellent phrase:
My Very Exciting Magic Carpet Just Sailed Under Nine Palace Elephants.
Mnemonics work when they're memorable. And Maryn's, which she says was inspired by "Aladdin," sure is. The magic carpet! Those palace elephants! How can you forget?
