NEW GARBAGE AND RECYCLE CARTS

As of May 4, 2009 all of Northern Hills has the new garbage (BROWN) and recycle (BLUE) carts.  Each cart will hold 96 gallons, about the same as 3 normal trash cans.  Each cart has a serial number.  Please save these numbers.  Inside the lid of each cart is a label that you need to fill in with your street name and number.

You can also get smaller carts, 48 gallon, that are more narrow and shorter.  You can only have large or small, not one of each.  Call 311 if you want the smaller carts.  If you elect for the smaller carts, you must keep them for one year.

The new carts are picked up by a robot arm from one person in the truck.  These carts must be placed on the street with the wheels next to the curb.  If your pickup is in a alley, the wheels must face toward the house.  If you put them on the sidewalk or not facing the street/alley they can be damaged or SA Solid Waste will not pick them up. Also SA Solid Waste will not pick up any loose bags.  If a bag does not fit in the cart you must wait till the next pickup.  You can put bags of leaves, branches etc in the BROWN garbage cart.

Remember BLUE on Monday and BROWN on Thursday.

SA Solid Waste will repair or replace carts that are broken (like if a lid or wheel falls off) at no charge.  These carts do not have a drain hole.  Please do not modify them as this is considered misuse.  Replacement cost is $50.

Some good news, San Antonio is in a partnership with the company that does our recycling and we get money back!  IT PAYS TO RECYCLE!    San Antonio is #3 in the US for recycling!

We used to have a crew of three for trash pickup, now we have one person.  SA Solid Waste is teaching some of these people to drive the new trucks.  Other people are being offered the option of getting a GED or being retrained in other fields.  NO person is being laid off without a option.

Let’s all remember to protect the appearance of Northern Hills.  Store these new carts in your garage, behind a fence, or in some manner that helps hide them from the street. If you have a unique idea for storing these new carts please contact your area rep or me.
